Frank McAvennie discusses West Ham’s move for Jesse Lingard

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie is baffled by Jesse Lingard’s situation as West Ham wait to see if they can sign the 28-year-old.

Lingard spent the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan at the London Stadium and was absolutely superb, and it looked as if he would sign for West Ham permanently [Daily Mail].

However, he is back with Manchester United, and the Hammers still don’t know if they can sign Lingard and the former West Ham forward told us that he was baffled by what is going on with Lingard.

He told West Ham Zone: I just don’t get it. Is the deal done? I just don’t know.

Again, everything is so slow.

I just would like to see more.”

Should West Ham get a move on?

We are now just less than a month away until the Hammers start their Premier League campaign against Newcastle United, and they have not been very active in the transfer market yet.

The Lingard deal probably should have been quite a quick one to complete. The player is reportedly keen on the move [Claret & Hugh]. The Red Devils are looking for between £15million – £20million, which for a player who had as much impact as he did, should have been a no-brainer [Claret & Hugh].

Instead, the deal has gone nowhere, and that has clearly annoyed McAvennie.

It is understandable that he is frustrated with what is happening at his old club in terms of transfers and Lingard. Hopefully, they pick up the pace in the coming days and try to get Lingard over the line.

It is a deal that makes sense for all parties, and it is baffling why it hasn’t been sorted out yet.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have offered £6m for a new goalkeeper.
