Frank McAvennie discusses Angelo Ogbonna’s injury at West Ham

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes that it is a “shame” that Angelo Ogbonna has been ruled out for West Ham.

The 33-year-old could miss the season after he suffered an ACL injury against Liverpool last Sunday [West Ham official website].

However, the club intend to extend his contract so that he can recover properly and hopefully return and contribute to the first team [The Athletic].

Speaking exclusively to the West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “He’s been there for such a long time.

“You can tell the confidence is running through the boy. He’s coming up with goals as well, which is even better. It is a shame for the club; it is a shame for David.”

Bad news for Ogbonna.

The former Italian international has played in every Premier League game this season, but his campaign could be over, which is a huge shame.

However, Ogbonna can still support the team from the sidelines, and it is a brilliant gesture from the club to extend his deal and allow him to heal properly.

You would hope that he can return to his best when he does come back, but for now, his absence should hand one of Craig Dawson or Issa Diop the chance to play regularly alongside Kurt Zouma.

On paper, you would say that Diop and Zouma could be a fantastic partnership, but it was Dawson who came off the bench against the Reds.

So, it will be intriguing to see how that plays out, but for now, we just have to hope that Ogbonna makes a full recovery and can still play some part in the Irons’ future.

In other West Ham news, Simon Jordan has had his say on Daniel Kretinsky’s investment in the Irons.
