Frank McAvennie delivers verdict on Armstrong-West Ham transfer speculation

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie suggests that David Moyes’ transfer track record at West Ham means Adam Armstrong could be a good signing for the club in the summer.

According to Hammers news website Claret & Hugh, Armstrong is the club’s number one striker target ahead of next season with Moyes in the market to bolster his centre-forward options.

Armstrong has netted 19 goals in 33 Championship appearances for Blackburn this season and FootballLeagueWorld has recently reported the 24-year-old would be up for grabs for less than £20million in the summer transfer window.

Newcastle are also said to be interested in re-signing their former striker, who made 15 Premier League appearances earlier in his career but failed to score a single top-flight goal for the Magpies.

However, McAvennie is willing to trust Moyes when it comes to landing players from the Championship due to his recent results in that market.

“David has brought people who play in the Championship to play in the Premier League before and it’s worked,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“Boys like that, if they’re scoring goals in the Championship like Armstrong, they’re really good players.

“Good luck to the boy if he comes up.”

West Ham find themselves in a serious battle to qualify for the Champions League next season with Moyes’ brilliant work in the transfer market playing a key role in that.

Jarrod Bowen and Said Benrahma have both stepped up from the Championship to the Premier League in the last year and a half and have been very good for the Irons.

Craig Dawson was also signed on loan from Watford after they were relegated to the second-tier and has been a player of the season contender in East London.

Armstrong’s been on fire at Ewood Park this season and the Hammers do need a new striker to serve as a back-up for Michail Antonio.

Can Armstrong be that player? We’re willing to agree with McAvennie and have faith in Moyes.

He’s not steered us wrong yet.

In other West Ham news, Paul Merson was impressed by Jesse Lingard’s goal against Arsenal.
