Frank McAvennie: Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma is ideal fit for West Ham

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie is excited by reports linking West Ham with a move for 26-year-old Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma.

The France international has been persistently linked with a move across London to link up with the Irons over the past week, with Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth writing via personal Twitter account [29/07/21] that the clubs are in talks, with Zouma preferring to remain in London over a switch to Sevilla.

Zouma has made 52 Premier League appearances for the current Champions League holders over the past two seasons, but it appears he is surplus to requirements under Thomas Tuchel as he chases Sevilla star Jules Kounde.

Fabian Balbuena’s departure as a free agent earlier this summer has left David Moyes short in the defensive department, and ex-Irons attacker McAvennie believes Zouma could slot in seamlessly at the London Stadium.

“He’s a good player of course he is, the kid is from Chelsea,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“You’ve got [Craig] Dawson and a few others but you can’t have enough good centre-halves. I think this boy would fit in at West Ham, I really do.

“I think he would take the spotlight, he’s not in the spotlight at Chelsea that’s for sure. I think he would shine and become an integral part of the team.”

Zouma is a multiple Premier League winner and has a wealth of experience in England, as well as being young enough to continue to develop.

He possesses some fearsome physical qualities, too, and that could prove vital alongside the ageing duo of Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna.

It’s a move we’re desperate to see happen.
