Frank McAvennie: Benrahma goal will boost confidence for West Ham ace
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Said Benrahma’s confidence will have been boosted by his first West Ham goal last weekend, according to Frank McAvennie.
Benrahma, 25, had to wait until his 28th Premier League appearance for the Hammers before he opened his goalscoring account for the London club in the 1-1 draw against Brighton.
The Algeria international then supplied an assist as the Irons beat West Brom on Wednesday night.
McAvennie is a massive fan of Benrahma and he claims David Moyes has done a great job of improving the former Brentford attacker over the course of his first season in East London.
Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “David left Benrahma out at the start of the season.
“The boy would have been gutted to not be playing and all that but Moyes told the press he was losing the ball in areas he shouldn’t have been losing the ball.
“There’s a time and place and if you want to lose it, lose it ahead of you.
“The boy’s got to learn that but he has and he’s going to be a better player for it.
“Moyes will improve the boy. He’s got undoubted ability – unbelievable ability. But, as David says, he’s got to try things in the right areas.
“Scoring the goal will give him confidence but I think he was playing very well anyway.”
Since joining the Hammers, Benrahma has made 32 appearances in all competitions, supplying seven assists as well as that one goal he grabbed versus Brighton last week.
West Ham’s final match of the season on Sunday is against Southampton and it would be great if the Algerian ace can end the campaign on a high by scoring again to show that he can be a force to be reckoned with for the Irons in Europe next term.
In other West Ham news, Jason Cundy was left baffled by this supporter’s ridiculous take on Moyes.
