Frank McAvennie admits West Ham need squad depth in summer
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie is in two minds about whether West Ham need to add to their central midfield options in the summer transfer window.
In the last couple of weeks, the Irons have been linked with Brighton’s Yves Bissouma and Southampton’s Mario Lemina [Guardian], who’s been on loan at Fulham this season.
On May 2, the Sunday People reported in their print edition that £30million-rated Bissouma is on West Ham’s radar amid a stunning season at Brighton.
He’s also wanted by Arsenal, Everton and Tottenham, which is no surprise with how he’s played this season.
Jamie Carragher has already tipped the “excellent” Mali international to move for “top dollar” in the summer on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, as quoted by Football365.
While Bissouma and Lemina are both central midfielders with Premier League experience, McAvennie admits he’s not heard of either.
While he’s unsure if either of them will head to the London Stadium in the summer, he is sure that David Moyes has to add to his squad in the summer.
“We all know Mark Noble’s not getting any younger but he’s done a wonderful job,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“[Declan] Rice and [Tomas] Soucek are the two who play in the midfield so I don’t know if they’ll want to buy these two players (Bissouma and Lemina). I don’t know them but they’ve got to bring somebody in, they need cover everywhere.
“They’ve got players in there and [Manuel] Lanzini’s now a team player and shown he can go in the midfield, letting Rice and Soucek do their bit in the middle.
“They need a striker and Lingard, that’s the most important thing for me. David will always find centre-halves too if somebody goes.”
In other West Ham news, the Hammers have been tipped to beat Aston Villa to this “major signing”.
