Frank McAvennie reacts to Super League chief’s financial claim on West Ham
Frank McAvennie has criticised Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli after the Italian supremo’s comments about West Ham last week.
As reported by Italian news oulet calciomercato on July 1, Agnelli claimed that the effects of the coronavirus pandemic had left West Ham, along with the likes of Barcelona, Inter Milan, and FC Porto, close to “insolvency”.
However, Claret and Hugh [04/07/21] responded to that claim with quotes from a “well-informed Hammers insider” who said that the club were in “very safe hands”.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, ex-Irons striker McAvennie hit out at the 45-year-old who was forced to resign from his positions as ECA chairman and UEFA Executive Committee to become the vice-chairman of the now-infamous ‘The Super League’, a breakaway European competition.
“I don’t get it,” McAvennie said. “There must have been something that happened, they must have tried to make enquiries about a player and they said no!
“Because they’re scratching their heads for money, they probably need money big time so they’ve probably tried to overprice a player and West Ham aren’t having it.
“Whatever you think of them, David Gold and David Sullivan are savvy, they’re not going to pay over the top for players that are not worth it.
“The guy’s got a bee in his bonnet, I don’t know why. Let him rant and take the pressure off his team.”

It was a bizarre comment to make by Agnelli, a deeply unpopular figure in football who is likely to be trying to take the heat off of himself at the moment.
He was spearheading the breakaway European competition that could have threatened the existence of countless clubs over the continent, but pertinently in England.
His greed, allied to that of other powerful supremos of elite-level European sides, was a dirty reminder of all that is wrong with modern football.
Luckily, fans, players and pundits came out in full force to oppose any such move being made, and now here we are, with Agnelli resorting to making remarks about West Ham.
As expected, though, his comments were quickly shot down, and hopefully, that is the last we hear from him for a while.
In other West Ham news, the Irons are reportedly closing in on the signing of this 2018 World Cup winner.
