Finance Expert shares bargain transfer view after Jesse Lingard saga at West Ham

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...

Dan Plumley has insisted that clubs are always looking for a free-agent gem despite Jesse Lingard failing to earn himself a move to West Ham United.

The England international is now training in Saudi Arabia after being at Rush Green for weeks with the Hammers squad and not earning a contract.

The finance expert admitted that while everyone is spending £100-150million on transfers, you can unearth a gem in the free agent market if you avoid the risks.

“Again, clubs are always looking for the other side of the coin,” he exclusively told West Ham News.

“We can see the figures in the transfer market and spending £100-150million, everyone is doing that, and it’s also about how you can differentiate that with a bargain.

That free agent market is where you can look to drive it, the risk there as well is that player may not look up to past expectations from a few years back.

There is talent in these free agent markets and if you can do a good piece of business there and the player brings something, you may unearth a gem there outside of splashing the cash which is what everyone is trying to do.”
