Finance Expert: London Stadium redevelopment on cards if West Ham United purchase

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...

Dan Plumley has insisted that West Ham United could redevelop the London Stadium if they were to fully purchase their home ground from LLDC.

The Finance Expert admitted that although the Irons currently have a brilliant deal on their home ground, the potential is there to generate even more revenue.

It comes after the BBC reported that the Hammers are open to the idea, with their current deal standing at around £4million-per-season, with changes already being made.

“I think it’s probably more what West Ham could do other than football and athletics if it is in their control,” he exclusively told West Ham Zone.

“It is a great deal financially that they have got on the stadium, but as a club, for the most part, you would want to own your own stadium and we have seen that across a number of clubs.

“It’s your asset, you have full control of what you do with the asset, and obviously, an resale value down the line. So, yes the deal on the London Stadium is great for West Ham, but part of the reason for wanting to buy it outright over time is probably so you can control what you then do with it and more so than they do and the minute.

“It may then mean there is potential for more revenue generation through other events that can offset the cost of the stadium a little bit.

“If you were going to buy it outright, you would likely redevelop it a little bit and move it completely away from what it was and it’s not cheap either.”

With Daniel Kretinsky potentially upping his stakes at the club and becoming the majority investor, that change could hold the key to everything changing at the London Stadium.

This is certainly one to watch at West Ham United in the years to come.
