Exclusive: McAvennie pays tribute to Moyes with West Ham sitting 5th in PL table
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has been raving about David Moyes after West Ham moved up to fifth place in the Premier League table on Monday night.
The Irons won their third consecutive game as they beat Aston Villa 2-1 at the London Stadium with Angelo Ogbonna and Jarrod Bowen getting themselves on the scoresheet.
Ex-West Ham striker McAvennie has suggested that no one deserves more credit for the club’s start to the season than Moyes, who has reinvigorated a side that could have easily suffered relegation last term.

“I didn’t have doubts about David Moyes, he was the right man for the job because I thought they’d get mid-table,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“He’s got them working together, he’s got the worth-ethic. Work hard and everything will fall into place.
“I’m delighted for David and I’m delighted for the fans.
“Fifth position, my god.”

Who would have though the Hammers would be where they are right now after the fixture list was announced in the summer?
Moyes’ men have already played against Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester, Tottenham, Manchester City and Liverpool yet have lost just two of those games and are looking as though they could qualify for Europe this season.
Not only are the Irons earning shock results against the best teams in the division, they are also beating teams they are expected to beat like Fulham, Sheffield United and Aston Villa.
Combine those two things and you have the recipe for a spot in the 2021/22 Europa League if they can maintain this form for the rest of the campaign.
Moyes had a rough few years after leaving Everton for Manchester United in 2013.
He’s now starting to show why Sir Alex Ferguson pinpointed him as his replacement seven years ago and why Man United should have probably given the Scotsman more time.
