Exclusive: Frank McAvennie heaps praise on Ben Johnson after first West Ham goal

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has been delighted with the rise of West Ham United defender Ben Johnson in recent weeks in the Premier League.

The young talent scored his first goal for the Irons last week in the 2-2 draw against Brighton, repaying David Moyes for the faith shown in him.

Johnson returned to the bench on Friday evening, as the Hammers picked up an impressive three points at Goodison Park against Everton.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said, “It was a good goal, as well. Listen, when it’s your first goal, it’s the best goal ever.

“It will hugely do his confidence, he’s only a young boy. That’s good for the fans as well, when they get back in, they’ll see young prospects coming through and it’s great, the fans will love that.

“The more the merrier, it’s been a long time since we’ve had players coming through.”

Johnson dropped back out of the side for the 1-0 win against Everton on Friday but has become a real option for the Irons.

The 20-year-old will be relishing the first-team opportunities heading his way in the absence of Arthur Masuaku, who remains out after recent surgery.

Moyes will have been delighted with the youngster too, as he gives him real options to continue with his five-at-the-back formation.

Long may this continue, with Johnson proving there are chances for academy players in this first-team if they prove they are good enough.
