Exclusive: McAvennie hopes ‘world-class’ Cavani misses West Ham v Man United
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Edinson Cavani has made the headlines for the right and the wrong reasons ahead of Manchester United’s trip to West Ham this weekend.
The 33-year-old striker came off the bench at Southampton on Sunday to score two goals and supply an assist as Man United came from two goals behind to win 3-2.
However, Cavani landed himself in hot water after the game by using a racial term on his Instagram account.

Although the Uruguayan has apologised, he still faces the prospect of being banned by the FA for three matches [The Guardian].
Ex-West Ham striker Frank McAvennie hopes that Cavani is hit with a ban ahead of the Hammers’ clash against Manchester United at the London Stadium on Saturday so that his old club doesn’t have to come up against some a top striker.
“I think we can get something. With a bit of luck, Cavani will be out because of his Instagram post,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“He is a difference. What a difference he is. Some people were laughing about why you would bring a player like that in but he’s world-class.”

It would certainly be easier for West Ham on Saturday if Man United were unable to have Cavani available to them.
The former Paris Saint-Germain striker turned the game on its head at St Mary’s at the weekend and could pose a similar threat against the Irons this weekend if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can use him.
Cavani is yet to start a Premier League game for the Red Devils but he did start and play 79 minutes against his old team-mates at PSG on Wednesday night in the Champions League.
Solskjaer might have done that to pre-empt Cavani being banned this weekend or his plan is to name the Uruguayan on the bench again.
