Exclusive: McAvennie fed up with West Ham signing players who just want the money

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has admitted that he is “fed up” of West Ham signing senior players who are just wanting money at the end of their careers.

Reports have emerged that the Irons could make a move for Inter Milan playmaker Christan Eriksen in the January window.

The Hammers won’t have bucketloads of cash available next month and may struggle to cough up the wages for the Danish superstar.

McAvennie has urged his former side to learn from the mistakes they have made in the past, as they look to continue their positive start to the Premier League.

“I’m fed up of them buying players at the end of their careers just for money,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone. “When are they going to learn?

“I don’t know the boy (Eriksen). He might be a total pro, come in and be the man we think he is and be a great signing.

“But West Ham have got to learn from the past. They’ve made a few signings that maybe just came for the money.”

We understand what McAvennie is saying.

In this case, though, Eriksen would be a completely different type of deal. At 28-years-old, the playmaker should be in his prime and nowhere near the end of his career.

Eriksen has only completed 297 minutes of action in the Serie A this season under Antonio Conte and could see the Hammers as an attractive move to earn more playing time.

The midfielder has yet to score or even assist a single goal in the league though, also failing to catch the eye in the Champions League.

McAvennie is right to warn the Hammers moving forward, but bringing in Eriksen could be the difference between Europa League qualification or not – time will tell.
