Exclusive: McAvennie delighted with Guardiola praise for West Ham

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie claims West Ham manager David Moyes will have been “angry” to have lost 2-1 away to Manchester City on Saturday.

John Stones and Ruben Dias scored the for Premier League leaders, either side of a goal by Hammers forward Michail Antonio.

Man City stretched their winning run to 20 matches against West Ham and, on Tuesday night, bagged their 21st successive victory over Wolves.

After City beat the Irons, Guardiola was quoted by the Express as paying tribute to the London club for their performance this season, as well as players like Jesse Lingard, Pablo Fornals and goalscorer Antonio.

Ex-West Ham striker McAvennie was pleased to hear Guardiola’s kind words and suggests Moyes should be happy with his team’s performance despite of the result.

“You take positives from it,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“The biggest positive I took from it was the plaudits from Pep.

“David will be angry they didn’t get anything from that game. Not many teams have put Man City to the sword like that.”

West Ham remain fourth in the Premier League table despite losing to runaway leaders Man City at the weekend but could find themselves dropping down to fifth on Thursday.

Everton play struggling West Brom and could go a point ahead of the Hammers with a victory at The Hawthorns while later on Thursday, Liverpool play Chelsea at Anfield.

No matter what happens at Merseyside, one of Liverpool or Chelsea will overtake Moyes’ men in the league but they will have played a game more.

There’s still plenty to play for this season. The Irons have lost seven matches in the Premier League this term and all but one of those came against one of the traditional big six teams.

If they can get points against teams you’d expect them to and maybe frustrate some of the bigger teams, a spot in Europe is definitely within their means.

In other West Ham news, the Irons are eyeing up Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham.
