Exclusive: McAvennie claims one signing could make West Ham contenders for Europe

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has claimed that West Ham United signing a striker could see them become genuine contenders for Europe.

The Irons have had a great start to the season, and are currently only three points behind Southampton in sixth spot in the Premier League.

Michail Antonio started the season in the final third, but a recent injury has seen Sebastien Haller step in – something McAvennie expects to change.

Speaking exclusive to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said, “If West Ham got an out-and-out striker, then they could be contenders for Europe.

“Until they get that, the supporters that I get in touch with – they’d love it. That’s what the fans want, they want to win a cup or challenge for Europe and that’d make a hell of a difference.”

David Moyes will be considering his options in the upcoming window, but won’t have much money to go out and address them.

The Irons boss recently admitted he wants signings, but that he wouldn’t expect any “big” names to walk through the door.

The injury worries of Antonio are beginning to get worst as the season goes on.

As it stands, Haller is the only available option at the London Stadium, and his inconsistencies are getting worst as each game passes.

After missing bucketloads of chances against Leeds, he went on to score an outrageous overhead kick against Crystal Palace, and he needs to start performing every week.

McAvennie has suggested Josh King as an option, with Claret and Hugh claiming the Hammers could structure a deal with instalments for the Norweigian international.

It is clear that the Irons need a striker, and McAvennie believes it could be the difference between Europe and another mid-table finish.
