Exclusive: Keith Hackett shares verdict on West Ham penalty shout v Manchester United
We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive West Ham columnist, each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Keith Hackett has claimed it was the right decision to not hand West Ham a penalty in their 1-0 defeat against Manchester United on Sunday.
Tomas Soucek went down under the pressure of Harry Maguire, but it was waved away by the officials and not checked by VAR.
Hackett believes that it was good that it wasn’t checked by the technology, as it has slowly been taking over from the responsibility that officials have.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, Hackett said, “I think they got it right.
“I think it’s good that they did. There lies the point, VAR comes in and they just accept it, although sometimes you need the ownership of the referee.
“The referee on this occasion could go to the monitor, but he didn’t.”
There has to be consistency from the officials and VAR in the Premier League.
Either everything needs to be checked, or they have to have more power in their own decisions when blowing the whistle.
Soucek did go down quite easily and there can’t be many complaints with the decision, and Moyes and the squad made no massive scene out of it.
There have been too many decisions that have gone against us this season, and hopefully, VAR and the officials have learned their lesson by this stage.
