Edson Alvarez problem mooted after West Ham United transfer development
Frank McAvennie has suggested that something could have happened behind the scenes as West Ham explore an exit for Edson Alvarez.
The Hammers are understood to be exploring a possible January move for the midfielder despite only arriving at the London Stadium during the summer of 2023 [Daily Mail, 8 October, page 57].
AC Milan have reportedly explored a player swap deal for the Mexican midfielder, with former Chelsea man Ruben Loftus-Cheek going the opposite way from Serie A.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Edson Alvarez hasn’t really done it so far, has he? We’ve got loads of midfielders, and I like Alvarez. When he plays to his best, he’s a good player. When he wants to take control, he can.
“When he wants to make a statement, he can because he’s that good of a player. But if there are rumours like this, something must have happened. I’m not too sure about Loftus-Cheek, though.
“I’m sure Lopetegui and his staff will be having a look. He won’t let Alvarez go unless he has someone who can cover that job. It’ll be interesting. We’ll see.”
West Ham United to replace Edson Alvarez with Ruben Loftus-Cheek?
Alvarez has made 50 appearances since arriving in East London last summer, becoming a key figure under David Moyes, but not so much under Julen Lopetegui.

He has only started three Premier League matches so far this season, coming on as a substitute in each of the last two games against Ipswich Town and Tottenham.
While there have been no rumours of a fallout at the London Stadium, it does not seem completely out of the question if the Hammers are serious about sanctioning his exit already.
In other West Ham news, Julen Lopetegui could drop a “high-profile” duo ahead of the Manchester United clash.
