David Moyes legacy verdict emerges at West Ham United v Manchester City

Frank McAvennie has urged West Ham United to give Manchester City “a fight” in David Moyes’ final game at the club.

Moyes is stepping down when his contract expires after the final game of the campaign against Pep Guardiola’s title-chasing side.

And McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – admits a heavy defeat wouldn’t tarnish what Moyes has done for the club during his second spell.

“I don’t think [a heavy defeat will tarnish Moyes’ legacy]. Just go and give a good account of yourselves and see what happens. It’s the best you can do,” McAvennie said.

“It’s the last game of the season, don’t walk off the pitch with a lot of could’ve, should’ve, would’ve. Just go out and play and don’t say, ‘I could’ve done better if I’d have done that.’

You’re going to get beat, I think, [City] have better players. But give them a fight. And when you give them a fight and you get in their face, then who knows? I’m not going to say that West Ham can match them [but] you’ve got to upset them, you’ve got to get in their face and annoy them. Then you’ve got a wee chance.

“[It’s a] special last game of the season, they’re going for the league. The only thing you’re counting on is the nerves, but they’ve been there so many times, so you can’t even rely on that because they’ve done it – the same as I say about Celtic, they’re winners all the time – and these guys at Man City are the same. I can’t see Pep panicking much.”

Can West Ham United cause an upset against Manchester City?

It is no secret that West Ham face a mammoth task against Manchester City.

Not only are Guardiola’s men motivated by the prospect of a historic fourth consecutive title, but City are the division’s top scorers, with 93 goals in just 37 games. The Hammers, meanwhile, have the league’s fourth-worst defence, conceding 71 times – ahead of only the bottom three.

West Ham United manager David Moyes
David Moyes will be remembered fondly by West Ham supporters.

It would take a truly special performance for Moyes’ reign to end in anything other than a defeat. But with players like Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta in the side, it’s certainly not impossible.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have been rejected by Edin Terzic.
