Frank McAvennie: David Moyes will have long West Ham scouting list after head of recruitment announcement
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie suggests Rob Newman will be a busy man after he was appointed as head of recruitment at West Ham last week.
The 57-year-old made the move from Manchester City to West Ham at the beginning of the month [01/10/21] after more than 12 years as an International Scouting and Recruitment Manager [WHUFC website].
Newman joins as part of a restructuring of the club’s football recruitment department.

Ex-Irons attacker McAvennie believes David Moyes will be right behind this appointment, and suggests it could stop expensive transfer failures likes Sebastien Haller.
“The recruitment was terrible for a while,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone. “They didn’t do their due diligence. David has to trust this guy because [otherwise] he wouldn’t have let him in.
“I think the bottom line is David wouldn’t have brought in [someone like] Haller, he’s not his kind of player. So whoever comes in has to be David’s sort of player and that will be the remit for this boy to go. The guy is going to take a lot of pressure off of him because of that.

“You can press a button and get anyone in the world now and have a look at him but there’s nothing like going to see them. A lot of people don’t do this, a big thing is you figure out what kind of person they are, how they will fit in the dressing room, I think that’s a big thing.
“West Ham players at the moment are like when we played when we were all together, we’re all still pals now. They’re all getting to that, they’re all having a laugh and when you’re having a laugh it doesn’t matter where you work, when you enjoy it, it’s not work.
“These boys are great and you can’t have anyone coming in that’s going to upset the squad, I think that’s his big thing.
“I think there will be a lot of people that he will want him to see, so I think he’ll be busy, which is great.”
In other West Ham news, the Irons want to sign this 22-year-old La Liga breakout star with a ‘very attractive’ release clause.
