West Ham Zone View: What’s the point of reported goalkeeper pursuit?
West Ham United had a genuine goalkeeping crisis earlier in the season, but it’s a problem that has definitely eased off over the past month or so.
Lukasz Fabianski is now back and playing again, while former Hammer Darren Randolph was signed in January to sooth the issue.
Plus, in Joseph Anang and Nathan Trott, the club have two of the finest young goalkeeping prospects around at the moment.
So you wouldn’t have thought that the Irons would be in the market for a new ‘keeper anytime soon, would you?
Think again.
Italian outlet Calcio Mercato reported that the east London outfit are on the trail of Inter Milan’s young shot-stopper Filip Stankovic, son of former Champions League winner Dejan.
It’s said that West Ham are following the 17-year-old, who has yet to make a first team appearance for the Milan giants.
That just seems bizarre, though? Really, what is the point in signing someone like him at this moment in time?
As mentioned, Fabianski is firmly entrenched as the club’s number one, and likely will be for two or three years more.
Beyond that, Randolph is there as a quality and experienced back-up, with David Martin a solid number three.
If you’re looking to the future you have Anang and Trott. The former has been manning the sticks for the Hammers’ Under-23s side this season, while the latter has been excelling – for the most part – on loan in League One with AFC Wimbledon.
Whether you’re looking at the short or the long term, this simply seems like a waste of both time and resources.
In other West Ham news, the club reportedly failed with a move for a midfielder from a Serie A giant last month.
