West Ham Zone View: Hammers must go all out for ex PL midfielder

West Ham United have long needed some extra help in central midfield, because they are far too reliant on Declan Rice and Mark Noble.

The signing of Jack Wilshere has, rather predictably, failed to pan out, while Carlos Sanchez is no-one’s idea of solid central midfield depth.

So it would be a fantastic idea for the club to invest in a new player in the middle of the park during this January transfer window.

Indeed, The Sun reported on Tuesday that Hammers boss David Moyes is attempting to bring former Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City midfielder Steven Nzonzi back to England.

West Ham

The Roma midfielder is free to leave the Italian capital on loan, and Moyes has been a long-time admirer of the France international.

The 31-year-old was on loan at Turkish giants Galatasaray during the first half of the season, where he put together some decent form.

He’s been averaging 76.9 passes per game, with a success rate of 90.1% in the Turkish top flight this campaign.

Obviously he’s a bit of a short-term solution, but you can still get two or three decent years out of him.

The Frenchman would allow Moyes to rotate between him and Noble for who plays alongside Rice in the middle of the park. The team have been reliant on their captain for far too long, especially as he’s only heading deeper into his thirties every day.

With that said, Moyes must ensure that the Irons board do their job and ensure that Nzonzi is wearing a claret and blue shirt come the end of this month.
