West Ham United sure to be plotting Steven Bergwijn transfer as David Ornstein shares Ajax update

West Ham United and Julen Lopetegui should already be putting plans in place to secure the signing of Ajax star Steven Bergwijn this summer.

The former Real Madrid boss looks set to succeed David Moyes at the London Stadium come the end of the season and he has already begun talks with the Hammers ahead of the summer transfer window.

While it remains to be seen what sort of players the Spanish manager will target, one name that was high on the Irons’ shopping list during the January transfer window was Dutch winger Bergwijn [Fabrizio Romano, 10 January].

For whatever reason, a winter move to the London Stadium never materialised even after Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals left East London, but a new update from David Ornstein may have opened the door to getting the transfer over the line.

According to Ornstein on Friday (10 May) the futures of a number of Ajax’s key stars such as Jordan Henderson and Bergwijn have been cast into doubt after the club missed out on Champions League qualification.

Neither players nor the club want to go their separate ways this summer, but the reality of the Dutch giant’s situation means that the books need to be balanced during the transfer window.

Both stars were enticed by a project at the Johan Cruyff Arena that is yet to materialise as the club continues to navigate one of the most difficult periods in its recent history.

Will West Ham United and Julen Lopetegui sign Steven Bergwijn in the summer transfer window?

Ajax’s dire current situation has opened the door for the Irons to swoop in and secure Bergwijn’s signature for a cut price as the Eredivisie giants will be desperate to get the winger off their books to balance the books.

The Hammers clearly need new additions out wide as they failed to replace either Fornals or Benrahma in January, which has left Moyes incredibly reliant on both Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen, with Ben Johnson even playing as a winger.

Bergwijn would not only solve that problem, but he would add some much-needed quality and Premier League experience. If a sensible price can be reached between the two clubs, the opportunity is clearly there to get this transfer over the line.
