West Ham United now have clear chance to sign Alphonse Areola after Nick Pope transfer development

West Ham may have received a massive boost in the race to sign Alphonse Areola.

The Hammers are keen to sign the Paris-Saint Germain goalkeeper this summer, but they were facing competition from Newcastle United [RMC Sport].

It seems the Magpies have shifted their attention elsewhere, paving the way for the Hammers to wrap up the deal for the 29-year-old keeper who impressed the 2021-22 campaign on loan at the London Stadium.

According to a report from The Telegraph (21 June), the Magpies are close to agreeing a deal to sign the England goalkeeper, Pope.

The deal will cost Newcastle between £8m-10m, and while it’s not a done deal, talks are at an advanced stage.

Basically, it gives the Hammers a breathing space to sign Areola, but they need to move quickly.

Areola’s official loan spell with the Hammers will be over at the end of this month. It means, the Hammers have only nine days to wrap up his permanent signing as part of the deal.

David Moyes’ side have already reached an agreement, in the region of £11m for Areola, but they are struggling to meet his personal terms [Claret and Hugh].

Newcastle could have been a serious rival in the race for Areola, considering they have the financial power to pull off the deal.

With them out of the way, the door is open for West Ham to get the deal done at the earliest. Having already signed Nayef Aguerd, the Hammers should aim to secure their second major signing in the form of Areola within this month.

Areola wants to continue at the London Stadium, where he wants to fight for the first-choice position at the club.

Dharmesh Sheth of Sky Sports has suggested on The West Ham Way podcast on June 21 that there is increasing confidence from the Hammers that they can get the deal done over the line.

The next few days are absolutely vital.
