West Ham United must go all in for Alexander Sorloth after new transfer update

One thing that was needed at West Ham United was change and the 2024/25 summer transfer window has certainly handed them that.

Before the window opening, David Moyes was relieved of his duties and Julen Lopetegui took over as the Hammers’ manager.

Winning their first European trophy alongside consistent finishes in the top 10, the Scotsman was a solid appointment for the club.

However, it was evident that change was needed, especially since West Ham conceded the fourth-most goals in the Premier League last term despite finishing in ninth place.

The likes of Wes Foderingham and Max Kilman are just two of the names that have been welcomed to the club.

And, although the latter will no doubt help sure up their defence, the Hammers could do with some attacking reinforcement too.

Why West Ham United need to sign Alexander Sorloth

A plethora of number nines such as Tammy Abraham have been linked with a move to the London Stadium but most recently, it’s been reported that West Ham has made an approach for Villareal ace Alexander Sorloth [AS, 4 July].

Since then, however, the Yellow Submarine’s asking price for the Norway international has been dropped to around £25.3million [Corrierre Dello Sport, 6 July], which by all accounts, would be a steal.

Michail Antonio has done a solid job of being the focal point of West Ham’s attack over the last few years but at the age of 34, his time could be coming to an end.

Last term he played 32 games and only managed to score six goals. Danny Ings’ record wasn’t much better with the former Liverpool man scoring just one top-flight goal last season.

It goes without saying that without Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen among their ranks, the Hammers would be far worse off.

But, with an attacker like Sorloth who scored 26 goals in La Liga last term, an awful lot of pressure would be alleviated off them both.

Hence, why, for £25.3m, it feels as if a move for the Norway international is a no-brainer.
