View: West Ham get big boost as Sandro Scharer named referee v Lyon

West Ham fans will be overjoyed as UEFA confirm there will be a new referee for the second Europa League second-leg clash against Lyon on Thursday [April 14].

Felix Zwayer, the official in charge of the London Stadium clash had an awful game and nearly cost David Moyes’ side the game and potentially the tie with their home advantage stolen away from them.

Sandro Scharer, the referee for the Irons’ first leg showdown against Sevilla has been tasked with the Groupama Stadium.

He ran the game excellently in Seville and the Hammers can now breathe a huge sigh of relief knowing they won’t be sabotaged by a catalogue of shocking decisions.

A joke.

West Ham supporters will still be fuming over the Zwayer’s shocker last time out against the Ligue 1 side.

How can a governing body as big as UEFA allow an official who has previously been banned from refereeing after he was accused of match-fixing during his time refereeing in Germany earlier in his career?

You could excuse one mistake, even with how bad it was, but it wasn’t just Aaron Cresswell’s joke of a red card that was the problem.

West Ham

The German seemingly favoured the Lyon all night long with a lot of questionable decisions going their way.

This doesn’t give the Hammers a fair shot at the game at the London Stadium or allow key man Cresswell to return but it is a great call from UEFA.

Hopefully, the Irons can book their place in the semi-final regardless of the awful officiating they have been subject to.
