View: West Ham fans should want Benrahma to suffer AFCON disaster
West Ham United star Said Benrahma and his Algeria side face an uphill battle to qualify from their Africa Cup of Nations group but that could be good for the Hammers.
They will face table-toppers Ivory Coast in their final group game today (20 January) knowing they need to win to make it through to the knockout stages of the competition.
If Benrahma’s Algeria do get knocked out though, then David Moyes will have the 26-year-old available for selection a lot sooner than he first imagined.
That would strengthen the Hammers side even further as he would likely to his rightful starting place on the left of the front three over Nikola Vlasic.
The Croatian has been very hit and miss while filling in for Benrahma on the left after a man of the match display against Leeds in the FA Cup was followed by a shocker against the same opposition a week later.
West Ham aren’t short in options for creative attackers with Manuel Lanzini and Pablo Fornals both performing well this season but Benrahma’s connection with Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen has been vital to the Irons’ form this season.
Five goals and four assists in the Premier League this season is among the better numbers for West Ham and Moyes will be glad to have that kind of contribution back in his team sooner rather than later.
