Niclas Fullkrug may have had his future at West Ham United saved after the sale of Hammers-linked Jonathan David has been ruled out by Lille's president.

Since the German arrived at the London Stadium he's rarely been seen in the Hammers' first team due to the injuries he's suffered.

Prior to his arrival, Julen Lopetegui's men were linked with a move for Canada international David [GiveMeSport, 14 November] but nothing ever came to fruition.

Now, however, thanks to quotes from Lille president Olivier Letang as relayed by Fabrizio Romano via X (20 November), it seems as if the striker is set to stay put in France for the time being with a January switch now ruled out.

"Jonathan David will not leave in January," he said to AfterRMC. "We made a new contract proposal and it’s up to Jonathan now”.

Niclas Fullkrug must get back to full fitness to prove his worth to West Ham

Of all Tim Steidten's summer signings, the arrival of Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund was perhaps the one that West Ham fans were most excited about.

Not only did the Hammers have one of the worst defensive records in the league last term but they also lacked a consistent focal point for their team.

David Moyes had the choice of Danny Ings or Michail Antonio to lead his attacking line and while the latter was chosen more than the Englishman, neither played to the standards they're capable of.

Fullkrug was expected to come in and help turn the Hammers' fortunes around and relieve some pressure from the shoulders of Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen.

This has been far from the case and at times, Lopetegui's team have looked worse than what Moyes' team did despite finishing the season with the fourth-worst defensive record in the league.

Upon his return from injury, Fullkrug needs to prove his worth to West Ham otherwise by the time the summer transfer window comes around, it could be curtains for his stint in the Premier League.
