Mavropanos now has fight of his career at West Ham amid transfer update

Konstantinos Mavropanos has the fight of his career coming up for West Ham United as he will never get a better move than where he is now.

The Greek international has been in and out of the Hammers side under Julen Lopetegui with the club having spent big on Max Kilman, also mindful of the fee they must cough up for loanee Jean-Clair Todibo next summer.

With Lopetegui’s team having massively faltered defensively, with every player culpable including Mavropanos, the former Arsenal star will now be faced with the biggest task of his club career to convince the hierarchy of a place in the side.

West Ham United seeking new defensive options

West Ham took huge gambles in the summer in what was an exciting transfer window, only to have stagnated this season with very little progress, 14th in the Premier League having conceded 28 goals.

Mavropanos has already seen his position under threat via the arrivals of Kilman and Todibo, despite Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd departing on loan deals which likely spell the end of their respective chapters in East London.

Lately, Tim Steidten has been back on the transfer charge with centre-half Luizao of Internacional considered [Andre Hernan, 9 December], alongside Chelsea’s out-of-favour defender Axel Disasi, who carries Premier League experience [TBR Football, 13 December].

The Irons board are clearly unimpressed by what they have witnessed in recent months – particularly from a defensive standpoint – but have already committed to an obligation to buy Todibo and Kilman was considered a marquee arrival.

This has not only left Lopetegui in an incredibly precarious position already, but also several of his players including Mavropanos. If he can perform to his full potential, he will remain in the side.

The defensive bar for the Hammers is so low that anyone showing consistency will be given the springboard to become a mainstay in the backline for time to come.
