Manchester United in talks over West Ham United target David Raum

West Ham could be set to miss out on German left-back David Raum as Manchester United look to have taken control of the race.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has reported that the Old Trafford club have taken place and that a move could happen unless German giants Borussia Dortmund can come back with an offer, dependent on the sales of Nico Schulz or Raphael Guerreiro.

Bild had reported Saturday evening (18 June) that the Hammers had been after the Hoffenheim defender along with Dortmund and Newcastle, before Plettenberg then mentioned the Red Devils’ entry into the race.

But judging by Plettenberg’s latest report it looks like they have shot to the front after he wrote on his Twitter account on Monday (20 June): “News Raum: MUFC wants him! Talks about the left defender have taken place.

“Talks ongoing & good but still a long way to go. Transfer probably around €30-35m. It is said that this transfer „can happen“.

“But: BVB could become hot if they sell Schulz or Guerreiro.”

The fact that the Irons are not even mentioned in that update is not a good sign for the club’s prospects of signing the 24-year-old.

He would seem to be exactly the sort of player they should be looking at to strengthen the left-back spot.

Aaron Cresswell is 32 and, while he has been a strong servant of the club, his two red cards during the knock-out stages of the Europa League were poor, and the second one essentially ended the club’s challenge.

Arthur Masuaku could be on the way out of the club and Ben Johnson is a utility player at this stage who favours the right-back role.

Spending approximately £30million on a full-back may be seen as steep, but the importance of the position is becoming ever-clearer.

The likes of Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool, and Chelsea pair Ben Chilwell and Reece James are key to how those sides operate, and if the Hammers had something similar it would assist their bid to enter the English elite.

Raum looks like he may be heading to Manchester unless West Ham get more heavily involved soon, which might turn out to be a significant missed opportunity.

They had a window of opportunity to strike but it appears to be closing.
