Jose Mourinho's comments on returning to the Premier League could prove cryptic for West Ham United fans in the near future.

Sky Sports have shared an interview with Mourinho on X [29 October], in which he says he would refuse any challenge in England which involves battling relegation.

Julen Lopetegui has been given breathing space by a very welcome late 2-1 win over Mourinho's former club Manchester United on Sunday [27 October], but many supporters would still find the decorated Portuguese a more appealing long-term option.

Would Jose Mourinho consider West Ham?

Mourinho's previous comments this week appeared to leave him there for the taking by an English club, claiming he "loves London" with his family still based in the capital, and having come to the end of his tether with UEFA-competing clubs.

The 61-year-old was sent to the stands on 24 October as his Fenerbahce side drew 1-1 with the Red Devils in Istanbul in the Europa League.

The Hammers are not a side considered to be battling relegation this year, though any hint of that stirred up by poor form from Lopetegui's team would appear to put Mourinho off further down the line.

But the ex-Chelsea and Tottenham manager's preference for London could see an opening for the board at the London Stadium to apply further pressure to Lopetegui for instant results, and they are likely to hold the belief Mourinho would get the best out of the summer's big-money project signings.

While Mourinho has never explicitly mentioned West Ham United, the clear but cryptic comments could go some way to hinting towards a sensational future move to East London.
