Jesse Lingard makes big West Ham mistake as he's slammed by Garth Crooks

Former West Ham midfielder Jesse Lingard has been slammed by BBC pundit Garth Crooks for signing a one-year-deal with Nottingham Forest.

The England international moved to the newly-promoted side earlier in the window after snubbing a return to the Hammers.

However, Crooks has revealed his opinion on the decision questioning Lingard’s mentality and mindset.

Crooks said on the BBC Sport website: “Precisely what Lingard is doing at Forest I am not entirely sure, but a one-year deal on a free transfer?

“What sort of commitment is that? Does Lingard think we are all stupid?

“Take the deal and split if the team goes down – is that the plan?

“I’m not sure who looks more ridiculous.

“Lingard for signing or Forest for accepting the terms.”

Questionable Decision?

Crooks’ comments were admittedly harsh, but he does have a point regarding Lingard’s decision.

A return to the London Stadium looked like a move that would benefit both parties and just seemed to make sense all around.

Lingard’s phenomenal form in his six-month stint in London helped him get back into the England squad and also fired the Hammers into Europe.

He had fans that adored him and the West Ham faithful would have undoubtedly welcomed him back with open arms had he returned to the club.

Also, with the signings that the club has made this summer, especially in the likes of Gianluca Scammaca and Maxwel Cornet, they look set for a promising season.

It can be assumed that the lucrative, and borderline ludicrous contract that Forest offered Lingard may have played a part in his decision.

Why Lingard chose to play for a club that will most likely be involved in a relegation battle rather than compete in the European Conference League and potentially battle for European places in the Premier League will remain a mystery.

A mystery that only Jesse Lingard will ever know the answer to.
