Jarrod Bowen 3/10, Alphonse Areola 9/10 MOTM – West Ham United player ratings v Everton

The West Ham players put in a battling performance as they secured a superb victory on the road against Everton on Saturday (2 March).

After Beto saw a first-half penalty saved by Alphonse Areola, the Portuguese forward handed the Toffees the lead just 10 minutes into the second half.

But the Hammers captain Kurt Zouma stepped up just eight minutes later to bring his side level before late goals from Tomas Soucek and Edson Alvarez secured the three points and a 3-1 win for David Moyes’s side at Goodison Park.

Here West Ham Zone rates the players out of 10 for their performances.

Alphonse Areola – 9

It was an excellent performance from the keeper as he denied Beto from the penalty spot just moments before half-time, pushing his low effort away from goal. The Frenchman had no chance of saving the forward’s free header, but he made a string of impressive stops throughout the afternoon and the victory wouldn’t have been possible without him.

Vladimir Coufal – 6

It was a steady performance from the Czech international after he didn’t really do too much wrong at Goodison. Despite being a bit sloppy in possession, the right-back won all four of his duels [SofaScore].

Konstantinos Mavropanos – 6

The Greek has done reasonably well after replacing Nayef Aguerd in the side over the past couple of games. The centre-back saw a header go just past the post in the first half as he rose highest to meet a corner, but he would’ve been disappointed to not get closer to Beto for the goal.

Kurt Zouma – 6

The Frenchman had a mixed afternoon against his old club. He gave away the penalty after handling the ball in the first half before his excellent header found the top corner just beyond the hour mark. The centre-back won five of his six duels and recorded a superb 93 per cent pass accuracy.

Emerson (Off for Ogbonna ’90) – 6

After an excellent performance against Brentford, Emerson had a decent game against Everton. The Italian should’ve done much better to prevent James Garner from getting his cross into the box for Beto’s goal, but he won six out of his seven duels and made two tackles. But he would’ve wanted to have more of an impact going forward.

Edson Alvarez in fine form for West Ham

Edson Alvarez – 9

It was another solid display from Alvarez. The midfielder saw an excellent low effort well-saved by Jordan Pickford in what was West Ham’s first chance of the game. He made five tackles, three interceptions and one block as he showed exactly why the club brought him in to replace Declan Rice over the summer. The Mexican’s injury-time goal capped off a superb performance.

Tomas Soucek – 6

Soucek wasn’t quite as convincing as his midfield partner, having given the ball away several times throughout the afternoon. But he made a crucial interception to deny Beto a clear chance in the first half and scored a sensational goal to help his side pick up the win.

James Ward-Prowse (Off for Phillips ’65) – 6

It was a typical Ward-Prowse performance, working hard and being tidy in possession of the ball. He recorded a 94 per cent pass success rate and it was his corner that found the head of Zouma for the equaliser before he was replaced by Kalvin Phillips midway through the second half.

West Ham attackers fail to impress

Mohammed Kudus (Off for Johnson ’90) – 5

It was a relatively quiet performance from Kudus by his standards. The Ghanian was a willing runner throughout the afternoon, but it just didn’t happen for him as he gave the ball away 16 times. But it was his cross that found Soucek for the winner.

Lucas Paqueta (Off for Antonio ’80) – 3

Paqueta was another Hammers attacker who would’ve wanted to do better. He recorded an extremely poor pass success rate of 59 per cent after giving the ball away 27 times. It spoke volumes when Moyes decided to take him off in the second half. The Brazilian has much higher standards than what he showed at Goodison.

Jarrod Bowen – 3

It’s hard to remember a game when Bowen was involved so little. The Englishman had just 22 touches throughout the afternoon as he looked lost leading the line for the Irons. He won none of his ground duels and didn’t have a single shot on goal. After scoring a hattrick against Brentford, it was an extremely disappointing performance from him despite the victory.

Subs

Kalvin Phillips (On for Ward-Prowse ’65) – 5

Although Phillips didn’t have much of an impact on the game, he did a decent job in midfield and didn’t really put a foot wrong on his return to the side.

Michail Antonio (On for Paqueta ’80) – N/A

Ben Johnson (On for Kudus ’90) – N/A

Angelo Ogbonna (On for Emerson ’90) – N/A
