David Sullivan can ‘learn from West Ham mistakes’ amid Tim Steidten sack update

David Sullivan has faced criticism at times during his ownership of West Ham.

Although the Hammers had some recent success, including winning the 2023 UEFA Conference League, the departure of David Moyes and the failure of successor Julen Lopetegui has naturally come under fire.

Technical director Tim Steidten backed the Spaniard heavily in the summer with plenty of money spent but what has been on display at the London Stadium this term has not yielded a return on that outlay.

Therefore, with the arrival of Graham Potter as the new Irons boss, it’s not surprising that he is bringing in Kyle Macaulay to oversee the transfer strategy at the club.

This will see the influence Steidten has in East London decrease, something alluded to in the Daily Mirror (print edition page 59, 22 January) as they reported that Sullivan will have a more hands-on relationship with Potter.

West Ham could soon part ways with Tim Steidten

The arrival of Macaulay to the London Stadium means that while the current technical director retains that title, he might not have as big of a role going forward.

That’s not to say that every signing underneath the German has been poor, a number of good players have been brought into the club.

However, the amount of money that has been wasted on people who have not given the Irons fans anything to think about this term cannot be escaped and there is blame to fall at Steidten’s door.

Therefore, it is interesting to see that Sullivan is opting to take a more hands-on role now and work closely with Potter in comparison to how he worked with previous managers.

This shows that the chief is of the belief that the new manager is a man to be trusted and that means, he has to lead the way forward on the pitch which could spell the end of Steidten’s role in East London.

Ultimately, he can learn from his mistakes and hopefully secure a brighter future for the Hammers.
