David Moyes could have 6 summer signings in West Ham United XI vs Man City
West Ham United could be ready to field over half a team of new signings when they face Manchester City on the opening day if David Moyes gets his wish.
The Hammers are keen to bolster their squad after making the Europa League semi-finals last season and finishing in 7th place in the Premier League, after a long slog saw them competing for a place in the Champions League.
But with so many moving parts in the current transfer window, what does a dream Moyes window look like for West Ham ahead of the opening game of the season? Probably something like this…
The club are looking to make significant signings for the squad this summer to try and improve their chances of battling in Europe, and they immediately ensured that Alphonse Areola will stay at the club beyond his loan.
His season-long loan from PSG ended but has now turned into a permanent five-year contract, and he will battle Lukasz Fabianski for the number one shirt this season. With an eye on the future, it’s possible that the Frenchman will get the nod to start the season.
In defence, Vladimir Coufal should get the nod in his right-back slot after seeing off competition from Ryan Fredericks and Ben Johnson to be first-choice. At left back Aaron Cresswell is likely to continue as first-choice, despite the club eyeing up a potential new signing.
In the heart of their back line they do have a new face, with Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd joining the club to partner Kurt Zouma and form a really solid partnership.
Declan Rice is expected to stay at the club for at least another season but his partner in midfield is likely to change, with Moyes targeting a new option after the retirement of Mark Noble and exit of Alex Kral.
Tomas Soucek’s future is up in the air and West Ham are looking at Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans as a potential option to help the club go up a level.
Ahead of that midfield, it could almost entirely a new unit if Moyes and the club can have their way. Jarrod Bowen’s position on the right-wing is safe, after a stellar season that earned him a maiden England call up.
The club are already trying to re-sign Jesse Lingard on a free transfer after his successful loan spell in the 2020/21 season, and his Manchester United contract has now officially expired. In the number ten role, he could be the perfect foil to link the midfield and attack.
On the left the club have been tipped to move for Villarreal winger Arnaut Danjuma [El Desmarque], who shone in the Champions League last season. His signing is the least likely of all mentioned, but if the chance to do it arrives it’s unlikely the club will look past it.
Up front, Armando Broja is the number one target for the club to add competition for Michail Antonio and if he is successfully signed then Moyes will have no qualms with throwing him straight in at the deep end.
