Ben Brereton Diaz: West Ham United's perfect Michail Antonio successor
Ben Brereton Diaz is the perfect successor for West Ham United stalwart Michail Antonio but they have to move quickly to get him.
The Blackburn Rovers star man was involved in 25 goals in 37 league games during the 2021/22 campaign making him the joint third-highest scorer in the Championship.
According to a report by Claret & Hugh on Monday [20 June], David Moyes is a fan of the striker who if he came to the Hammers would be a backup option for the Jamaica international.
That is the perfect role for the 23-year-old with him most likely taking some time to adapt to life playing in Premier League.
The Irons will have to move quickly though because bitter north London rivals Tottenham are also interested in the Chile international as a backup option for Harry Kane.
According to a report by The Sun on 06 June, Blackburn are looking for a bargain price of £13million after extending his contract by one year.
Make no mistake, Tottenham are an attractive proposition under Antonio Conte but will Diaz even play as Kane’s backup?
At least not in any games worthwhile because the England captain never wants to miss a game.
Things would be very different in east London. Antonio is 32 now and it was evident last season that the forward needs a break every now and then.
Diaz could learn his trade at the club in 2022/23, gearing up to become the number one striker at West Ham when Antonio leaves which will most likely be at the end of his contract in 2024.
That is far from saying he will have to wait until then because David Moyes will undoubtedly pick the best striker for the job, but the number one spot is waiting for somebody to claim it.
He is young enough and good enough to be a long-term solution and the Hammers must act.
