West Ham United ‘stuck’ as new PSR update emerges in Premier League
West Ham United will be “stuck” outside of the Premier League top six having been impacted the “most” by new financial fair play rules, according to Chris Weatherspoon.
An agreement was reached at the Premier League shareholders meeting to introduce new financial rules ahead of the 2025/26 season, with squad cost measures superseding the current profit and sustainability regulations.
While accountant and policy advisor to the campaign group Fair Play, Weatherspoon, has insisted these new rules won’t change much in English football, he did admit it will harm the Hammers’ ability to break the “glass ceiling”.
As quoted by The Athletic on Wednesday (17 April) he said: “It’s going to make a glass ceiling, potentially more than there already is. I’m not sure the changes will impact hugely.
“I suppose the ones it impacts the most are the ones you call aspirational clubs. Certain clubs like West Ham, Newcastle, and Aston Villa, the clubs just outside that top six. You’re almost saying that’s where the aspirational clubs are stuck.
“It could only be a truly good thing if everyone started from the same point. You could argue that it’s better than what we’ve got, but I don’t see it as a fix.”
Will West Ham United breach Premier League PSR rules amid new transfer update?
The Hammers have spent sensibly in recent years to attempt to bridge the gap to the big six in the Premier League while not breaching profit and sustainability rules, but that hard work is set to be undone quickly.
With these new regulations, it is only going to become harder for teams like David Moyes’ Hammers to close the gap to the biggest clubs and book their place in European football each and every season.

Moyes’ side have impressed in both the Europa and Europa Conference League in recent years, but it seems unlikely the Scotsman, or whoever takes over at the London Stadium, will be able to maintain that impressive record.
Hopefully, the Irons will be able to find a way to increase their revenue to remain within the new regulations, otherwise, the next few years could see West Ham slide back down the Premier League table.
