West Ham United learn outcome of £3.6m legal battle – Martyn Ziegler

West Ham United have won their court battle over a payment they were asked to make to the London Stadium owners regarding Daniel Kretinsky, according to Martyn Ziegler.

The respected journalist reported via The Times’ online edition on Monday (27 January) that the High Court ruled in the Irons’ favour.

United had been told they were obliged to hand over a £3.6million sum to E20 Stadium after Kretinsky bought a 27 per cent stake in the club.

As per the original lease agreement signed before the Irons moved into the London Stadium, the owners were entitled to a fee for any stake in the club.

West Ham handed over £2.6m, but it was argued that a higher sum should have been paid. The Hammers challenged that and have now been successful in doing so.

It brings an end – or so it is hoped – to the long-running saga.

As for Kretinsky, he has been in the headlines of late due to his plans involving the Royal Mail, which could in itself have ramification for the Irons.

Ultimately, £3.6m is a drop in the pond when it comes to a Premier League football club, but that is besides the point.

United argued their case and have been justified in doing so, with this the outcome everyone associated with the club was hoping for.
