West Ham United January transfer plans shared amid £82m update
West Ham will have “limited funds” to spend in the January transfer window after a net outlay of £82million in the summer, according to Sean Whetstone.
Whetstone reported via the West Ham Football X account (8 September), that the Hammers spent £122m on their nine signings in the summer transfer window, while collecting £40m in player sales.
As a result, Julen Lopetegui and Tim Steidten will have very little to spend on any necessary reinforcements by the time the January transfer window comes around in 2025.
While the spending may be paused in January, the Irons have already committed £34m towards next summer’s transfer business as Jean-Clair Todibo’s loan move from Lille becomes permanent.
Will West Ham need to spend in the January transfer window?
Given the massive outlay of funds awarded to Lopetegui this summer in a massive overhaul of the existing Hammers squad, it would be surprising to see the Spaniard want further signings in January.
It’s undeniable that Lopetegui has added remarkable levels of quality to a squad which had already been regulars in European competition previously, with several of those new faces still to breakthrough.
Deadline Day arrival Carlos Soler, signed on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, is yet to make an appearance for his new club, while Todibo, Crysencio Summerville, and Niclas Fullkrug are yet to start in the Premier League.
The boldness of Lopetegui and Steidten’s transfer strategy is best represented in the signing of Todibo, beating Juventus in a long-running duel for the Frenchman and sealing the deal on a loan-to-buy [Whetstone, 11 August].
Todibo, Soler, Summerville, and recent Germany goalscorer Fullkrug will all have their parts to play in the opening months of the season, and thus further reinforcements in January should hardly be needed.
