West Ham have made it no secret that they will sign a new striker in January.

Ivan Toney is wanted at the London Stadium, with tax issues surrounding the England international, who is currently in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli.

That opens the door for Toney, although any deal will come with large costs.

West Ham open door to seal Ivan Toney transfer

Dan Plumley has insisted that Fullkrug leaving early in January could open the door for West Ham to bring in a new number nine for Nuno.

The football finance expert admits that the higher costs will be offset by the German international, but there will be one eye on the impending new squad cost ratio changes.

"That's where the Ivan Toney story will start to gain more traction," Plumley exclusively told West Ham Zone.

"It does give you some flexibility either way to spend on a new striker, if we are talking Fullkrug going and Toney coming in, West Ham are still going to have to pay more in terms of wages and the structure.

"It does offset some of that, but it does free up an opportunity to go into the market and also now, we're talking about the new squad-cost ratios, clubs will have one eye on that as well because of the amortisation of the transfer fees and wages."

How has Niclas Fullkrug performed this season?

With zero goals in eight appearances, five of those being starts, the German international can officially go down as a failure in the Premier League.

Arriving from Borussia Dortmund for big money towards the end of his career was always a gamble for both parties, as West Ham and Fullkrug will admit hasn't worked.

If Toney becomes available, no matter the cost, then this exit could make perfect sense for all parties.
