Glen Johnson thinks West Ham will keep Jarrod Bowen after Liverpool signed Luis Diaz

Glen Johnson believes the signing of Luis Diaz at Liverpool has ‘done West Ham a favour’ in their bid to keep Jarrod Bowen at the club beyond the summer.

Liverpool had been linked with a move for the 25-year-old following his excellent form this season [The Athletic], with some comparing him to Mohamed Salah.

However, Jurgen Klopp splashed the cash on Porto winger Diaz in January after interest from Tottenham forced their hand, and former Hammers defender Glen Johnson believes that could have ended the interest in Bowen.

West Ham United

“We don’t know how strong Liverpool’s interest is in [Jarrod] Bowen anyway. With the signing of Luis Diaz, I don’t think Liverpool will be looking to sign Bowen too, if there was any truth in the rumours to begin with,” Sky pundit Johnson told Bettingodds.com [via Football.London].

“If there was interest then I believe the signing of Diaz has done West Ham a favour.”

Boost

David Moyes and the club faces a huge battle on their hands to keep the first-team squad together this summer, but this may have helped.

If the club fails to secure Champions League football for next season, then interest in the likes of Declan Rice and Bowen will be huge from the top clubs in the league.

West Ham

Obviously, the club won’t want to sell any of them, but the chances of keeping hold of these talents are much easier when there are fewer teams in the hunt.

Bowen is currently the first-choice attacker at the club, whether it be in his right-wing position or as the central striker and if he left for a top club then that probably wouldn’t be the case.

He’ll have more chance of winning things elsewhere probably, but West Ham can become a team that wins things if they keep hold of him for the long-term.
